Vanguard Global Technology Index ETF (VTEK) — Review & Analysis
VTEK is Vanguard's challenge to NDQ and the broader thematic tech category, with $50 million in assets as at May 2026. Vanguard launched VTEK on 25 March 2026 at 0.23% MER — meaningfully cheaper than NDQ (0.48%), FANG (0.35%) and TECH (0.45%). VTEK is now the cheapest pure-play global technology ETF on the ASX. The fund tracks the MSCI World Technology Select Index, holding approximately 200 global technology companies across software, semiconductors, internet services and hardware.
To compare VTEK side-by-side with every other ETF on the ASX, see the full ETF directory.
VTEK's portfolio is dominated by the same US tech mega-caps that drive NDQ and TECH. As at May 2026, expected top holdings include Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, Alphabet (A and C share classes), Broadcom, Meta, Tesla, AMD, Adobe and Oracle. The difference vs NDQ is that VTEK is a pure-sector ETF (only tech companies) rather than a Nasdaq-100 index ETF (which also includes Costco, PepsiCo, Mondelez and other non-tech Nasdaq listings). Geographic exposure is approximately 85% US, with the remainder spread across Taiwan (TSMC), Korea (Samsung), Germany (SAP) and the Netherlands (ASML). Too new for meaningful return data.
VTEK pays distributions quarterly (late March, June, September and December) at a minimal yield — around 0.5-1.0% gross. There are no franking credits. VTEK is currency-unhedged. For the AUD-hedged version, see VTKH (also launched 25 March 2026, 0.26% MER). The launch creates the first credible fee threat to NDQ's dominance — over 30 years on $100k, the 25 basis point fee saving compounds to roughly $50k of additional return.
VTEK is positioned to take share from NDQ over time, particularly for new investors building tech exposure from scratch. Existing NDQ holders may face capital gains tax friction in switching, but new contributions should flow to VTEK on cost-minimisation grounds.
