Vanguard Diversified Balanced Index ETF (VDBA) — Review & Analysis

VDBA is Vanguard's balanced all-in-one ETF — a 50/50 split between growth and income assets. The fund holds a diversified blend across Australian shares, international shares (developed and emerging), Australian bonds, international bonds and hedged international bonds, all built using Vanguard's underlying sector ETFs. The 0.27% p.a. management fee is consistent across Vanguard's diversified series. Compare VDBA across the diversified cohort on our all ETFs directory.

VDBA sits in the middle of Vanguard's diversified ladder. VDCO is the most conservative at 70% income / 30% growth, VDBA is balanced at 50/50, VDGR tilts growth at 30/70, VDHG is high growth at 10/90, and VDAL is all growth at 0/100. All five charge the same 0.27% fee — the differentiator is purely the asset allocation glide path.

The 50/50 mix gives VDBA materially lower volatility than the growth-tilted funds but also lower long-term return expectations. Historical balanced portfolios have delivered around 6-7% per year over multi-decade periods versus 8-10% for growth-tilted funds, with substantially smaller drawdowns. The defensive sleeve cushions equity falls — when shares dropped sharply in 2020 and 2022, VDBA fell roughly half as much as VDHG or VDAL.

VDBA suits investors approaching retirement, or those with shorter time horizons who want diversified exposure without the equity-heavy volatility of VDHG. The fund is functionally a complete portfolio in a single ticker — no rebalancing required. Our how to build your core portfolio guide covers how diversified all-in-one ETFs fit the core portfolio framework.
