Vanguard Diversified Growth Index ETF (VDGR) — Review & Analysis

VDGR is Vanguard's middle-tier diversified portfolio ETF, with $1.5 billion in assets as at May 2026 — about 0.4% of the entire $358 billion Australian ETF market. Part of Vanguard's "Diversified Index ETF" range that also includes VDHG (high growth), VDBA (balanced) and VDCO (conservative). Vanguard launched the range in November 2017 to compete with multi-asset managed funds and SMSF-friendly platforms. VDGR holds approximately 70% growth assets (equities and listed property) and 30% defensive assets (bonds and cash) in a single trade. The management fee is 0.27% per annum — competitive for a multi-asset ready-made portfolio.

VDGR holds a fund-of-funds structure with Vanguard's underlying index ETFs. As at May 2026, the target allocation is approximately 30% Australian shares (via VAS), 28% international shares (via VGS), 8% international shares hedged (via VGAD), 7% small-cap international, ~22% Australian and international fixed income, and ~5% cash. The fund automatically rebalances quarterly to maintain target weights — meaning trimmed winners and added to laggards systematically. Over the 5 years to May 2026, VDGR returned +36.6% total return — meaningfully behind broader equity ETFs but with significantly lower volatility because of the 30% bond and cash allocation.

VDGR pays distributions quarterly (late September, December, March and June). As at May 2026, the trailing 12-month cash distribution yield runs around 3.5-4.0% gross, with a portion of the Australian equity component carrying franking credits. The combination of growth assets (capital appreciation) and bond income (defensive yield) gives VDGR a higher cash yield than pure equity ETFs while still allowing capital growth.

VDGR is the right choice for investors who want a one-trade balanced portfolio with no maintenance. It pairs well in tax-advantaged accounts (super, pension phase) or for investors who don't want to think about asset allocation. For accumulators with 10+ year horizons, VDHG (90% growth) or DHHF (100% growth) have outperformed; for conservative investors near retirement, VDBA (50/50) is more appropriate. VDGR fits the middle ground. A $10,000 investment in VDGR at its November 2017 launch (with all distributions reinvested) would be worth roughly $17,500 as at May 2026 — an annualised return of about 6.8% per year over the 8.5-year period.
