Global X Green Metal Miners ETF (GMTL) — Review & Analysis
GMTL holds global companies producing critical metals needed for clean energy infrastructure — primarily lithium, copper, nickel and cobalt. AUM is $13.04 million with a 0.69% p.a. fee. Compare GMTL alongside XMET and other thematic options on our critical minerals ETF page and the commodities and resources ETF page.
GMTL competes most directly with XMET (Betashares Energy Transition Metals, also 0.69% but $123M AUM) in the diversified critical-minerals niche. The two funds use different index methodologies — XMET tracks Euronext IQ's index, GMTL follows a Solactive index — producing different country and stock weightings.
GMTL is materially smaller in AUM, which can mean wider bid-ask spreads at execution. Either fund delivers diversified exposure to the electrification thesis through a single ticker, but XMET's deeper liquidity is meaningful for larger trades.
Critical minerals miners are cyclical and volatile, with returns tied to EV demand, grid storage, and Chinese refining capacity. The fund is unhedged. Our every theme ETF on the ASX guide covers how critical minerals sit alongside other thematic funds.
