BetaShares U.S. Equities Strong Bear ETF (BBUS) — Review & Analysis

BBUS is the largest US equity short ETF on the ASX with AUM of $133.87 million as at May 2026. The fund targets approximately -2 to -2.75x the daily return of the S&P 500 through futures and swaps with daily exposure reset, currency-hedged to AUD. The 1.32% p.a. management fee is the highest in the inverse equity category. Compare BBUS across the inverse cohort on our short and inverse ETF page or use the Compare ETFs tool to evaluate against SNAS.

The benchmark mechanism is the same daily-reset leverage as BBOZ on Australian equities. When the S&P 500 falls 1% in a day, BBUS targets +2 to +2.75%; when the S&P 500 rises 1%, BBUS loses 2 to 2.75%. The daily reset creates volatility decay over multi-day periods — meaning BBUS can lose value even during sideways markets through compounding effects.

BBUS competes most directly with SNAS (Global X Ultra Short Nasdaq, 1.00% MER, $58.89M AUM). The differences are benchmark (S&P 500 vs Nasdaq 100) and fee (BBUS 32bp more expensive). Investors expressing a directional bearish view on broad US equities use BBUS; for tech-specific shorts, SNAS. The fund's AUD hedge means returns reflect pure S&P 500 movement without USD/AUD noise.

BBUS is a tactical short-term instrument, not a buy-and-hold position. The combination of high fee (1.32%), volatility decay and the long-term upward bias of US equities means holding BBUS for extended periods has historically destroyed capital. Our hold vs trade ETFs guide covers when leveraged inverse structures suit short-duration positioning.
