abrdn Sustainable Asian Opportunities Active ETF (ASAO) — Review & Analysis

ASAO is abrdn's actively managed Asia ex-Japan strategy with an explicit ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) overlay. AUM is $1.95 million as at May 2026 with a 1.18% p.a. management fee — making this the smallest active Asia ETF on the ASX and the most expensive on fees. Compare ASAO across the Asia active and passive cohort on our Asia ETF page or use the Compare ETFs tool to put it side-by-side with PAXX, FASI or VAE.

The ESG screen is what distinguishes ASAO from other active Asia options. PAXX (Platinum Asia, 1.10%) and FASI (Fidelity Asia, 1.15%) are both active but without an explicit sustainability mandate. ASAO returned +41.2% over the past year to May 2026 — competitive with PAXX (+37.9%) and well ahead of FASI (+11.9%). The investment methodology combines bottom-up stock picking with negative screening of fossil fuels, tobacco and weapons, plus positive selection of companies aligned with sustainability themes.

Structurally, the small AUM of under $2M is a meaningful concern — micro-fund ETFs can have wider bid-ask spreads, lower liquidity and theoretical (if rare) closure risk if AUM doesn't grow. For investors who want active Asia exposure with an ESG screen and are prepared to monitor the position, ASAO is the only purpose-built vehicle on the ASX. The high fee and small size mean it is more appropriate as a satellite than a core position.

For investors with explicit sustainability mandates, ASAO is the targeted vehicle — but the size and fee profile require careful sizing. Read our Asia, China & Emerging Markets ETF guide for the broader active versus passive comparison across the region.
