PIMCO Global Bond Active ETF (PGBF) — Review & Analysis

PGBF is PIMCO's global bond active ETF — the world's largest fixed income manager applied to global government and credit markets. Listed in February 2025, AUM is still building as at May 2026. PIMCO manages over US$2 trillion in fixed income globally — more than any other manager — and its actively managed global bond strategies have decades of institutional track record. Compare PGBF across the fixed income cohort on our fixed income ETF page or use the Compare ETFs tool to evaluate against MQDB or VBND.

The active methodology combines top-down macro views with bottom-up security selection across the global bond universe. PIMCO's portfolio managers actively allocate across US Treasuries, European sovereign debt, investment-grade and high-yield credit, emerging market bonds and currency positions. The active overlay aims to outperform passive global bond benchmarks like the Bloomberg Global Aggregate (the benchmark tracked by passive VBND) by 50-150bp annually net of fees over full cycles.

PGBF's closest peer is MQDB (Macquarie Dynamic Bond), the other major actively managed global bond ETF on the ASX. The choice between them comes down to manager preference — PIMCO brings unmatched global scale and institutional credibility in fixed income; Macquarie brings strong Australian fixed income expertise and adviser relationships.

PGBF is hedged against foreign currency exposure to deliver clean fixed income returns in AUD terms. Distributions are typically paid quarterly reflecting underlying coupon income across the global portfolio. The fund suits investors who want active management overlay on global bonds rather than tracking the passive global aggregate index. Our active vs passive ETFs guide covers when active fixed income has and hasn't outperformed.
