BetaShares Australian Composite Bond ETF (OZBD) — Review & Analysis
OZBD takes a smart-beta approach to Australian fixed income — selecting bonds based on risk-adjusted income potential rather than debt outstanding (the methodology used by traditional cap-weighted bond indices). AUM is $1.11 billion as at May 2026 with a 0.19% p.a. management fee. Compare OZBD across the fixed income cohort on our fixed income ETF page or use the Compare ETFs tool to evaluate against IAF, BOND and VAF.
The income methodology is the central feature. Traditional cap-weighted bond indices weight by the size of outstanding debt — meaning investors get more exposure to the largest borrowers (typically governments) regardless of yield. OZBD reverses that logic, selecting bonds based on their risk-adjusted income potential. The result is a portfolio tilted toward higher-yielding investment-grade names that traditional indices would underweight, aiming to deliver higher yield without taking on more credit risk than conventional bond funds.
OZBD's structural innovation differentiates it from passive peers like IAF (0.10%), BOND (0.10%) and VAF. The 19bp fee is higher than pure passive trackers but cheaper than fully active products like MQDB and PGBF. Investors seeking yield enhancement over cap-weighted bond indices without paying active management fees use OZBD as the rules-based smart-beta middle ground.
OZBD is unhedged (irrelevant for AUD-denominated Australian bonds). Distributions are paid regularly reflecting the enhanced underlying coupon income from the yield-tilt methodology. Our bond and fixed income ETFs guide covers OZBD's methodology alongside passive and active bond alternatives.
