VanEck Australian Resources ETF (MVR) — Review & Analysis
MVR tracks the MVIS Australia Resources 25 Index — the 25 largest ASX-listed mining and energy companies including BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue, Woodside, South32 and Newmont. AUM is $575.26 million with a 0.35% p.a. management fee — sitting alongside QRE (0.34%) and OZR (0.34%) as the three main Australian resources sector funds. Compare them all on our commodities and resources ETF page.
The three ASX resources ETFs target the same universe with subtle differences. MVR caps individual stock weights more aggressively, which has historically given it a slight tilt toward mid-cap miners and away from the BHP/Rio duopoly.
QRE follows a Solactive index; OZR tracks the S&P/ASX 200 Resources Sub-Index. Returns between the three are broadly correlated but can diverge by 1-3% in any given year depending on how the index methodology handles capping and inclusion criteria.
Australian resources companies are heavily exposed to iron ore, gold, copper and energy prices, and to Chinese demand. MVR has historically had stronger inflation hedge characteristics than broad ASX exposure thanks to its commodity-heavy composition. Our inflation-proof your portfolio guide covers how resources fit into inflation strategies.
